Age

Young people aged 18 to 24 are often overrepresented among the homeless population, particularly those who have aged out of the foster care system or experienced family instability. LGBTQ+ youth are also at increased risk of homelessness due to rejection from their families.The majority of homeless individuals in NYC are adults between the ages of 25 and 54. Economic instability, housing affordability issues, and lack of access to supportive services contribute to homelessness among this demographics.Seniors- While less common, homelessness among older adults, typically aged 55 and older, is a growing concern.

Gender

Men: about 60-70% of the population

Women: lesser – 25-30% of the population

LGBTQ+ – There is underreporting and lack of knowledge of the same. Some research suggests 20-40% of them lgbtq community is homeless.

Health Issues

Estimates suggest that a significant portion of the homeless population in NYC, often around 30% to 40% or more, may experience mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and schizophrenia.Substance abuse is prevalent among the homeless population, with estimates indicating that approximately 30% to 40% or more of individuals experiencing homelessness in NYC struggle with substance abuse issues, including alcoholism and drug addiction. Chronic medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, and HIV/AIDS are common among the homeless population. Studies suggest that around 20% to 30% or more of homeless individuals in NYC may have chronic health conditions.HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are among the infectious diseases that affect homeless individuals. The percentage of homeless individuals affected by infectious diseases may vary, but estimates range from 10% to 20% or more. Estimates suggest that approximately 20% to 30% or more of homeless individuals in NYC may experience dental health issues.
